Computer Equipment Disposal or Recycling.

It can be difficult to dispose of redundant or broken computer equipment. There are three important considerations that you need to be aware of before disposing or recycling computer equipment.

The Law.

Computer equipment disposal must comply with current UK and European legislation. Recycling sites and processes are audited ensuring that environmental practices are maintained. Also, legal compliance is assured as part of ISO 14001 environmental management certification.

The Environment.

Waste electrical/electronic equipment (WEEE) is the fastest growing element in the municipal waste stream. Computer equipment contains hazardous substances such as lead, cadmium, mercury, bromine compounds and arsenic.

Disposal poses a real threat of pollution to water, air and land. The European Community has issued the WEEE directive that aims to reduce the waste arising from electrical/electronic equipment.

The WEEE directive sets a target that 65% of IT equipment must be recycled. Materials such as CRTs, LCD displays, printed circuit boards, batteries and flame retardant plastics must be pre-treated before disposal.

Data Security.

All data must be removed from hard disk drives using specialist overwriting and disk formatting software. Checks should be carried out to ensure that this happens before collection.

Hard drives that are faulty or cannot be wiped of data should be physically impaired. This is an approved process which renders the unit inoperable prior to recycling.

We work closely with the UK’s leading reuse and recycling organisation. They are registered as an Authorised Approved Treatment Facility (AATF) for Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE).
